Appraisal
The EMICS appraisal process is a peer reviewed process ensuring clinical governance and ongoing professional development in the area of pre-hospital medicine. The process specifically looks at the skills of delivering medical care in the pre-hospital field and is required for the ongoing registration of EMICS with the East Midlands Ambulance Service.
The role of the Appraiser in the process is to support the appraisee in their development. There should be exposure to PHEC with evidence of ongoing CPD as well as practical clinical experience.
Appraisal is conducted by an Appraiser with the agreement of the Appraisee, in a confidential discussion basing discussion around the following documents. The outline of the discussion process is covered in document EMICS Appraisal guidance.
Appraiser documents to be completed
Appraisal Proforma: The generic appraisal document to be completed demonstrating your ongoing activity, your educational learning. The clinician is expected to have received child protection training as part of their normal work practice. If training in child protection has not occurred, the clinician can be directed to the appropriate course.
Significant Clinical Interventions: An important part of the appraisal process is the reflection process of recorded clinical activity. The reflection follows discussion with your appraiser, for example, does any educational learning follow a particular incident.
Probity: Ensuring honesty and professional behaviour is a reflective sheet as developed by the East Midlands Deanery allowing you to confirm that you follow the principles of probity.
Health: A similar document to Probity developed by the East Midlands Deanery allowing you to confirm that you follow the principles of health
Documentation to be be forwarded to the Clinical Chairman of EMICS.
The appraisal discussion takes place confidentially using the above documents for the process of reflection and discussion. Following this, the Appraiser will complete the Appraiser form.
Appraiser form: Provides a summary that the discussion has taken place
Personal Development Plan (PDP): Outlines the planned educational objectives for the year
Once the appraisal is complete, both the PDP and the Appraiser form is forwarded to be held confidentially with the Clinical Chairman of EMICS. EMICS is then in a position to assure the Medical Director of the East Midlands Ambulance Service that appraisal has been completed.
